In Lil Uzi Vert’s case, his rise was accompanied by not only a song or two, but multiple mixtapes such as Luv is Rage, Lil Uzi Vert vs. When they broke through the SoundCloud threshold and began achieving substantial streaming numbers, it usually took one or more hit songs to make them popular. When these rappers came on the scene, they usually accompanied their music with eccentric personalities and appearances. When you type in a Google search of “mumble rap artists,” it directs you to a list of artists under the title “SoundCloud rap.” This list contains artists such as Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty, Lil Pump, 21 Savage, Playboi Carti, and Trippie Redd. ![]() Most of what rap fans like to call mumble rappers are those who started their careers on SoundCloud. This begs the question then: how should we actually categorize this form of rap? They don’t know how to categorize it, ‘cause it’s art. “They don’t understand my slang or my accent. “Nobody who say they (is) mumble rap mumbles,” Savage said. In an interview with Rolling Stone, 21 Savage pointed to this large dismissal of new age rap by a group of fans. For the past two to three years, mumble rap has not been a part of the rap landscape at all.īut, while the sound of rap music has evolved, some listeners haven't. However, as they released more music and began to spread their influence to up-and-coming artists, their use of mumbling turned out to just be a fad.Īs trap music rose to prominence and became the forefront of rap, the leaders of the sub-genre - including Migos, Thugger, Future, Kodak Black, Gucci Mane, Lil Uzi Vert, and more - strayed away from the mumbling routine. His mumbling style contributed to his rise, and he and Future (who actually had a momentary beef) pioneered the new genre. In the song, Young Thug mumbles throughout his verse and chorus (the song, however, is still a banger). That being said, it’s a bit too overhated on these parts imo.In 2014, Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan released the Rich Gang single “Lifestyle.” This was most of the hip-hop world’s introduction to mumble rap, sparking a revolution and a meme. So yeah - I do dislike a number of songs in the genre, and I’m ready for it to go away, at least somewhat. I don’t think there’s a genre that’s more fun to blast at a party or out of your car. ![]() Hip hop hasn’t really been about the lyrics in a long time - it’s about the vibe and the way songs sound, and at least to me, a lot of mumble rap tends to be fairly appealing in that aspect. At minimum, it’s opened up the door to a lot more experimentation and actually talented artists then would’ve been possible at any other time.Īnd yeah the lyrics are generally pretty bad, but I think crunk is actually worse in that aspect (though only slightly). That being said, the genre isn’t entirely bad, and there’s actually some pretty interesting artists in the scene. I also think we are at a massive point of mumble rap/trap over saturation in the mainstream, so I’m not surprised there’s this much backlash. Everyone just leeches off each other's success and hardly anyone in the game ever innovates pass "hey look I know how not to rhyme the same 2 words together over and over." This is why I dislike mumble rap alot.Īm I really gonna have to be the one to defend mumble rap?Īs a disclaimer, I’m far from a big fan of everything in the genre, or even the genre as a whole. On top of that, nobody in the Mumble rap scence builds on what made rap what it was, there's no witty or clever lines (that i know of) theres no impressive flow or skills that only the best could pull it, theres no impressive rhyme schemes that are tough to pull off. Now Mumble rap just feels more about the money rather than the effort it took to get the money and the importance of keeping money. ![]() Now I'm not saying every rap song was about the street life and how hard it was, but at its core most rap songs were. I feel it shits on what made rap what it is, and in specific it takes away from the biggest thing rap was, Street Poetry. As someone who has been listening to rap old school and new school for a very very long time now, I think mumble rap is trash plainand simple and never really got the appeal of it. ![]()
